65DAYSOFSTATIC INTERVIEW

Words: Richard Heaven

Paul Wolinski anwsers some questions for Noise Addiction.

How has 2010 been for you so far?

It’s been going really well, thanks. First off, we finished our record. And then we toured it. The reactions to both the record and the shows has been fantastic, from inside and outside the band. It’s still very exciting. The record has been out for maybe three weeks now, and we have just finished the huge, 6 week European tour, but it feels like the whole campaign for this new-and-improved 65daysofstatic is only just warming up. We have plenty more plans for this record.

After distancing yourself from the post-rock scene with We Were Exploding Anyway, do you plan to continue exploring dance music or take 65daysofstatic in a different direction again?

We’ve never been in any scenes. It’s a trick of the light. The light, in this analogy, being music journalism. We don’t really know that many other bands anyway. We’ve definitely not ever been invited into a club.

When we first started out as a band, we didn’t have a drummer, we wrote big glitchy electronic beats and then played really noisy guitars all over the top of them. This is how it all started for us – this post rock thing happened somewhere in the middle, apparently, but really only in the places where words were written about us. So we genuinely don’t see this new record as us departing anything, or heading off on a tangent to explore dance music, it just seems like a constant evolution. We are getting better at focusing on our strengths. Perhaps that’s it. Because we want to be the best we can possibly be.

How much input do you, as the band, have in the artistic direction of your releases?

All of it! This time we let a friend of ours, Caspar Newbolt from Version Industries, to do the actual work. He’s much better at it than us.

How was touring with The Cure?

Amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

How did the collaboration with Robert Smith on We Were Exploding Anyway come about?

We asked him. He said yes. That’s the long and short of it. I mean, I guess there’s a huge back story, but it’s been really well documented all over the place. I’m not sure I could bring anything new to it at this point…

How do you manage to keep your shows so intense after four albums? Many bands seem to lose their way but you seem as passionate and forward thinking as ever.

We always keep in mind how lucky we are to be doing this. We have the best job in the world. Not having lyrics in our songs is probably useful too – the same song can carry different meaning every single day. It helps keep things fresh, you know? Everything that happens to you throughout the day can be fed into playing the show at night. You don’t have to carefully squeeze meaning into boxes designed for something else.

Is there a possibility of you ever performing Fall Of Math or One Time For All Time in it’s entirety?

I don’t think we would ever rule it out, but personally I have never been very excited about this concept. Records are records and live shows are live shows. The strengths that they each play to are very, very different. We sometimes try and write our setlists in code because we don’t want people to know what we’re about to play next. If I had a chance to see my favourite band play a show, I would much prefer to go not knowing what they are about to play, but assuming that whatever show they gave me they felt was their strongest, rather than going and knowing in advance everything that’s gonna happen.

Is there any possibility of Circle Takes The Square touring with you?

That would be lovely. Have they finished their new record yet? It’s been a very long time…

Are there any smaller, rising bands you would tip for big things at the moment?

On the European tour we have played shows with Kong, Nedry and Loops Haunt – all very different, all equally worthy of your time.
