Colchester Arts Centre have been pulling some big rabbits out of the hat this year, with the likes of The Automatic, The Klaxons, Young Guns, Bowling For Soup and recently Bring Me The Horizon gracing the Essex Venue.
It was now time for Italian metal act Lacuna Coil to strut their stuff.
With a sold out crowd filling up the venue ‘Slaves To Gravity’ opened the show. This is the bands 2nd time playing the Arts Centre this year, and it shows you how far they have come, when from the 1st moment the band started playing, the atmosphere was turned up a few notches.
A much improved sound from the London group compared to last time and with the 3 guitarists weaving and jumping about the stage wildly, it showed that the members were enjoying their time in the spotlight.
Frontman Tommy Gleeson downed his guitar halfway through the set and with mic in hand marched into the crowd to all the screaming fans delight.
With signing to a label and touring with bands such as Bullet For My Valentine, Aiden and now Lacuna Coil, the STG boys are building up a great cv and are showing their worth. As a big fan, i only hope they keep pushing themselves as im positive they will be headlining these shows instead of being a support act. Great stuff.
By the time Lacuna Coil take to the stage, the venue is full to the seams of a mixed aged crowd.
The lights are dimmed and the band march on one by one, slowly filling up the intimate platform instantly launch themselves into a few songs from their new album.
The stunning Christina Scabbia’s beautifully haunting voice intertwining with other frontman Andrea Ferro’s gruff direct vocals give a refreshing blend of gothic nu-metal sound – The rough and smooth in one very contrasting yet pleasant gift to the ears.
The crowd are producing some sing-a-long moments which in the venues room sound completely epic from all angles. As the set goes on everyone is treated to a bunch of songs from throughout the bands history, which each song is applauded more and more.
Lacuna’s live performance can not be faulted, each riff, vocal and beat sounding exactly how it comes out of the cd player. This goes to show that this band are close and understand each other very well. With their sound differing slightly from what alot of europe loved about the italian band (The haunting gothic metal), I hope they dont get trapped into becoming to mainstream and turning into the exact duplicate of Evanescence as this would upset alot of the die hard that was in force at tonights show.
But back to tonights show…. I have attended alot of gigs this year and from a neutrals point of view id have to say that Lacuna Coil have to be one of the best live acts i have witnessed. Along with a great lighting show, you just cannot be but mesmorised by the fantastic vocals by Christina and the great interaction with the audience by the entire band.
