City Slang is excited to announce the release of NADA SURF’s first album of new material in four years! ‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’ comes out on 23 January 2012.
A first glimpse of the record comes as a free download of the stunning 5:18 min opus grande and instant classic, “When I Was Young”:
‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’is NADA SURF’s sixth studio album, and third for City Slang, following the successful and critically lauded ’The Weight is a Gift’ (2005), ’Lucky’ (2007) and their self-released covers record ’If i had a hifi’ (2010) that was intended to be only available at shows but forced into normal retail by popular demand.
NADA SURF’s lineup for 15 years has been and still is Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar), Daniel Lorca (bass) and Ira Elliot (drums), though this time, they invited guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices) to join in the recording process as well as a certain increasingly prolific Martin Wenk of Calexico fame. Chris Shaw (Wilco, Brendan Benson and Super Furry Animals) was brought in to produce and record, having worked with the band before when he mixed their 2005 smash, “Always Love.”
“We’ve always played faster and a little harder live,”Caws says, “but we’d play so carefully in the studio. So with this album, we made a conscious decision to preserve what it felt like in the practice room, when you play with that new-song energy. Just embrace it and not worry whether we’re overdoing it, kind of get all the thinking out of the way.”
UK dates in February 2012.
07. Feb UK Glasgow – King Tuts
08. Feb UK London – Koko
We took it from a Bob Dylan documentary where they were talking about the McCarthyist Blacklisters, I liked the “ers” bit. Joe Strummer was in a band called the 101ers and I liked the “ers” bit of that. We are not making any statements or anything except maybe that we have good credit.
Which bands do you draw inspiration from musically?
Sting, Brian May, late Rod Stewart, Brian Adams, they’re the big ones. Ummmm we take inspiration from all sorts, The Jesus Lizard, Shellac and Kong (also Brew records) are massive influences. I’d be hard pressed to tell you a better band in the UK than Kong past or present. Ummm Pissed Jean, Big ‘n and Oxes bands like that. We also take a bunch of inspiration from bands that are around us all the time like Hawk Eyes and These Monsters. Having a bunch of bands around you that you like as bands and as people does the world of good for what you do I think.
What can people expect from your live show?
We put Circle Of Life by Elton John on the PA and all sit and cry for 30 minutes.
What song would you recommend from your Facebook?
If I could post “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal on it, it would be that. As it is there are three you can stream, Swords, I Can Confirm… and Trick F*ck. Take your pick they are are all pretty good if you wanna know what we sound like.
