Slam Dunk Interview: Lower Than Atlantis (27/05/12)

Our last interview of the day from the Slam Dunk Festival Emma Bowdidge spoke with Lower Than Atlantis about their recent tour support with Twin Atlantic, a very brief discussion about their 3rd album and praise for their producer John Mitchell who’s working with them on the upcoming album. Bassist Dec Hart and Drummer Eddy Thrower answer for the band.

So we’re half way through the day of Slam Dunk South, what are your thoughts so far?

Dec: Having a good time but I think we’ve both got heat stroke or something.
Eddy: Terrible! So bad, didn’t help that last night we got pretty pissed as well.
Dec: Typical English though complaining about when it’s hot and then complaining when it starts raining and that.
Eddy: It is a beautiful day!

You attended the after party in Leeds last night then?

Eddy: Yeah! It was a laugh.
Dec: It’s good you see because all of our mates are here and all of our mates are in bands as well so we get to see them.
Eddy: If you were to #tag what we tweeted last night at the after party it would of been like ‘Killing it’, ‘stoked’..
Dec: ‘Seeing my boys’ and ‘hang outs’.
Eddy: We hate all of those words so!

How did your South crowd differ from the North crowd yesterday?

Dec: Well today was outside and the north crowd yesterday was inside. I think it seemed bigger yesterday because the stage was bigger, but probably because it was outside more people watched us. They’re both just as good as each other.

You finished up touring last month with Twin Atlantic – How did that go?

Eddy: That was pretty cool wasn’t it.
Dec: It was weird because we went in to the tour thinking that it’d be a lot of LTA kids but I think they’ve now started to appeal to a more main stream audience. We’re picking up fans everyday which is what we’re on tour for and to support people on tour for.
Eddy: We got to play in front of a lot of people in Scotland which we never really do.
Dec: The first show was like 14/1500.
Eddy: It wasn’t just Glasgow or Edinburgh either.
Dec: Inverness and Dunfermline. We wouldn’t be able to headline our own shows with that many people in Scotland so it was like, good.

On your Facebook it’s mentioned Album 3 Summer 2012 – How’s the record coming along?

Eddy: Basically almost done, we just need to get it back from mastering.
Dec: But we can’t tell you anything else about it.
Eddy: Just expect an album soon basically!

What can fans expect from this third album?

Dec and Eddy: An LTA record!
Eddy: Like me and Mike would say, ‘World Record’ is like a skeleton of what we wanted to do and this album is like a massive/muscly, really good looking guy.
Dec: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Eddy: It’s the same for everyone really, it’s matured.

You recorded with John Mitchell (Outhouse Studios) who worked on your second album ‘World Record’ – What’s it like working with him again?

Eddy: Amazing!
Dec: He’s an absoloute legend – So funny and is so brilliant at what he does.
Eddy: Especially vocals – So good at doing vocals. He’s amazing with harmonies and really good to work with.
Dec: We kind of had him as more of a producer rather than him sitting there tracking everything, he was literally like getting involved. He’d be like ‘This harmonie sounds better’ and he was hands on rather than just pressing record – He had other people to do that for him. John Mitchell if you’re reading – We love ya!!

What other festivals will Lower Than Atlantis be appearing at this summer?

Dec: Rock Am Ring, Rock In The Park, Download.
Eddy: There’s a lot of small ones I think.
Dec: Maybe more but I can’t say.

What kind of small ones will you be at then?

Dec: Nass Festival and Cockermouth Festival. Every weekend we’ve pretty much got a festival.

What bands are you most looking forward to checking out today?

Eddy: Architects! I saw them yesterday and they were amazing. Don Broco, While She Sleeps and all those bands.
Dec: Taking Back Sunday and Motion City Soundtrack who are playing now!

Thanks for your time – Any last words?

Eddy: Fuck it to the man!

As mentioned in the interview Lower Than Atlantis will be hitting up many festivals over the summer and they’ll be a third studio album from them soon. Keep up to date with them on FACEBOOK.
