A PLASTIC ROSE – BOY RACER
Released 18th June 2012 (Di Di Mau)
Words: Tom Willmott
Once again, Northern Ireland are pulling out all the stops. A Plastic Rose are yet another splendid addition to the growing number of fine bands who produce the kind of visceral rock we have come to expect from these shores. The band managed to get a small break when they were offered an opening slot supporting their fellow natives, the hit -making Snow Patrol. However, their latest single,“Boy Racer”, couldn’t sound more different from the stadium -influenced anthems of Gary Lightbody’s crew.
At the start there is a very definite upbeat feel but as time goes on the tempo explodes into a heavier, more disjointed outpouring, even slipping in some grunge -influenced tones in the final seconds. It’s equal parts fun and dirty, which shows this four piece’s great potential to diversify.
Over the summer, A Plastic Rose have several shows lined up which, after this impressive effort, should attract more fans so come September, when their album is due for release, hopefully they will be on many more people’s radar.
