CAV OK – 4AM
Released 5th December 2011

Words: Gaz Martinez

Following in the electro/indie path that bands like The Klaxons and Hadouken! Have carved out for themselves, Cav Ok certainly do this relatively young genre justice with their EP 4am. It has all the necessary elements from each. 4am the title track, throws you right into the spirit of the sound and hits you with every weapon in Cav Ok’s arsenal. From the characteristic twangy guitar tones and drums, relentlessly attacking the hi-hat and keeping four to the floor, to the synths and vocals providing the majority of the melodies and hooks. Every element combines smoothly to give you four songs that at times feel to be stretched out a little too long, but each have their own consistent bounce.

Bad Dreams keeps the tempo going, but connotes a more sombre side to this band, while Catfight brings you right back into the dance fray, giving the bass the spotlight in the verses. A surprise at the end of 4am is 4pm, essentially a remix of the title track with a decent drop to break up the rhythm. While a pleasant twist on the opening track, I’m left wishing that Barry Kenyon and co would have given us another original number instead.

Overall this EP feels a bit longer than it really needs to be, but the time that you are listening to Cav Ok’s 4am, you are not bored. Good job lads!
