COMPLY OR DIE – DEPTHS
Released 5th September 2011
Words: Richard Heaven
Belfast has never been known for it’s ground breaking punk bands but that’s never been an issue for the self-proclaimed vermin of the scene Comply Or Die. Formed in 2008, the old school three piece have been refining their sound both in the studio and on the stage, all of which has led to the recording of their second album ‘Depths’.
So is it any good? In a word, yes. It might not be break down barriers or inspire a generation in the way that Never Mind The Bollocks did back in ’77 but for fans of brash guitar work, steady bass and Weiland-esque vocals then Depths should be high on your to-discover list.
I’d say that it’s biggest downfall is its length. At 45 minutes long Depths begins to merge into one distorted track. While ‘Vermin’ and ‘Motives’ does deviate from their sound by flirting with experimental punk and hardcore, it isn’t quite enough to convince me that Comply or Die have got quite reached their potential yet.
