DEAD END LIARS – THROW ME DOWN
Released 21st May 2012
Words: John Newspeaker for Noise Addiction
Light in numbers they may be but Dead End Liars certainly make up for it in heavy noise. ‘Throw Me Down’ is very much in the style of the Queens of the Stone Age in attack and delivery but song wise it does seem light in substance which they possibly over compensate for by cranking up the distorted bass sound. This is fine for 2.47 minutes but a complete album could be overwhelming. Maybe that is the point of the exercise, and these boys do know what they are doing as previous single ‘Tongues, Tongues, Tongues’ has proved.
Although in a similar vein ‘Tongues’ works better as a song, and by keeping their trademark sound ‘Throw Me Down’ still is very much Dead End Liars, but I feel they need to mix it up a bit more for me to buy the album. I do salute them in keeping it real in these days of Lip Sync pop pap, and it must be extremely difficult to differ songs and sound with only two instruments, (White Stripes aside) so let’s welcome on board the Essex duo, and hopefully they can bring a guitar or keyboard next time just so we can get a wider appreciation of their obvious talent.
