DEPTH – WAITING FOR THE WAVES
Released 25th February 2012
Words: Charlie Wallis
Depth are a band who have really put in their dues in the last few years. Their live experience and relentless gigging shows them to be one of East Anglia’s hardest working bands. Their latest offering in the form of “Waiting for the Waves” is a testament to that hard work and it would seem their efforts are starting to pay dividends. From track one this EP is an extremely impressive body of work. Depth’s previous offering, full length album “Situations Fulfilled”, showed elements of excellence but the recording quality meant the CD struggled to demonstrate Depth’s talent. “Waiting for the Waves” is not burdened with any such issue.
The songwriting is accomplished with imaginative harmonies woven through blistering riffs. Opening track “All I Know” sets the bar high for the rest of the CD quickly followed by live favourite “Hope In Mind” with one of the most epic choruses you’re likely to hear from many, if not most local bands. Title track “Waiting for the Waves” hits the listener with an opening that Killswitch Engage would be proud of. What’s evident as the EP progresses is that Depth are starting to really make more of the way their members work together both instrumentally and vocally which is really going to help set them apart from the bog standard of up and coming acts.
What’s refreshing about this EP is the mixture of heaviness and melody and not in your standard heavy bit, quiet bit, heavy bit formula. The way the different sounds intermingle shows that there really is a place at the forefront of alternative music for Depth and this EP just might be the springboard they need to expand their audience further and further afield.
