GENERAL FIASCO – BAD HABITS
Released 30th July 2012 (Dirty Hit)
Words: Rebecca Dixon
Northern Irish indie rock band General Fiasco’s new single Bad Habits gives us a taste of what to expect from their newest album Unfaithfully Yours.
Bad Habits is weighty yet still possesses the fresh sound presented in earlier singles from their previous album Buildings. The monster of a riff carries the song along accompanied by a steady drum beat that although is somewhat understated is a crucial aspect to the song. The unassuming vocals are in no way lost in the fantastic raucous of the instrumentation. With lyrics such as “Are you ever gonna let me in” repeated throughout the track and ponderings such as “I’m starting to think now that maybe you did/ You got these broken minds but they’re all here/ If it cost me, If it wears you out” it is easy to imagine this anthemic song sung along to live.
The black and white music video echoes the simple stylishness of the single with various different camera angles keeping up interest and interesting use of light. General Fiasco have clearly grown and honed their sound when considering earlier efforts which received mixed reviews. Again, the weighty riffs and clever use of lyrics are evidence of this however to what extent they have grown in comparison to other bands at the moment is unsure. Bad Habits is definitely a song to listen to and the classy video is also definitely one to watch. However, it will be interesting to see what General Fiasco’s second album Unfaithfully Yours brings as if it is all of a similar nature to this track then it could be one that just ends up in the ‘Indie dumping ground’ that is forever overflowing. Hopefully this is not the case as this band does show talent, energy and creativity. With a bit of luck, these are things we will find in their album and future singles.
