LAST DINOSAURS – TIME AND PLACE
Released 28th May 2012 (Fiction Records)

Words: Emma Lawrence

Last Dinosaurs are a band I had never heard of until I listened to this single when it came to me for review.  And I must say, I’ve been missing out! “Time and Place” is the perfect summer anthem.  They hail from Brisbane, Australia, and have a summer, beach party vibe, much the same as Vampire Weekend.

The jingly guitar intro instantly puts you in a good mood and makes you want to dance.  The chorus is extremely catchy, “Nicola, we’ve gotta make a difference” gets caught in your head and loops round and round, its certainly one that I couldn’t get out of my head for days after I listened to this track.

The catchy melody is very surf-indie, a genre which I have just made up.  They are like a shinier version of surf-punk band Bleeding Knees Club, who also come from Oz.  It makes you want to go out and dance and spend time with your friends on the beach enjoying a BBQ in the warm summer sun, something which sadly doesn’t happen in Britain and seems more achievable in Australia than it is here.

Overall, this single is a breath of fresh air, and something that will definitely put a smile on your face through the rainy summer days of the United Kingdom.  I’d urge anyone to catch these guys live if they are doing festivals, if they are half as energetic live as they are recorded, I imagine you wouldn’t be disappointed!
