LOSTPROPHETS – WEAPONS

Weapons is Lostprophet’s fifth studio album, and now with a large fanbase backing them the band have carved themselves a sizable section of the Welsh music scene, and for good reason. Weapons is a reminder of just how well Lostprophets handle their now well defined sound. The album kicks off with the band’s first single Bring ‘Em Down, which is released 26th March. Weapons is full of killer songs, though unlikely to win fans of their debut over, the album continues down the path Lostprophets have been treading since their second release, a mix of alternative rock with heavy guitars. Weapons is full of anthemic songs, however throughout the eleven track album there are some absolute stand-out tunes.

Characterized by a memorable melody backed by a strong rhythmic drum beat We Bring An Arsenal has all the ingredients for being a live favourite. However on record it still shines as a solid track, possibly the best off the album. It uses chanting, sing-a-long backing vocals effectively to enhance the fast, excitable three and a half minutes that speaks loudly and boldly, it’s bound to be on repeat. We Bring An Arsenal stands as a solid representation of Lostprophets’ abilities to formulate well structured songs that retain a sense of raw edge to them.

Another powerful track is A Song For Where I’m From, using the now immense, mammoth feel that Lostprophets have mastered over the years. The song has a wistful sense of nostalgia as the track details the feelings of home: “You’ve gotta move forward boy, you gotta get out of this town,” Watkins sings. Yet another tune that promises to deliver in a live situation, but still retains brilliance on record.

Somedays is a slower, melodic track backed by classic Lostprophet lyrics, but don’t let that throw you: it still feels massive. There is something of a Rooftops vibe, but only through the message, the song itself has a very different sound. The synth and drums becomes particularly important in the construction as the song picks up pace. Somedays breaks up the album, remaining upbeat yet adding a second layer to the overall emotional concept of Weapons.

There’s no doubt Weapons is another strong release from Lostprophets. It’s certain to please their fans, and solid proof the band are still going strong.
