MATT CARDLE – AMAZING
Released 19th February 2012 (Columbia UK)

Words: Gaz Martinez

Anybody that knows Biffy Clyro will know how they did a brilliant cover version of Matt Cardle’s debut song When We Collide back in 2010 (Feel the sarcasm) jokes aside, it’s now 2012, and Mr Cardle’s just dropped his newest single for the album Letters, does it set help Matt Cardle distance himself from the other X-Factor throwaways, or is it one more step to the refuse pile?

As one might expect from an X-Factor winner Amazing may look, sound, smell and feel like your standard block of throwaway pop music, and for the most part, you’d be right. The standard template of verse-chorus-verse-chorus is followed to the letter here, but with the song being co-written by the man behind Ellie Goulding and Will Young, what did you expect? That said, it is a piece of music that is done surprisingly well, so the sentimentality of Cardle’s clichéd lyrics don’t seem quite so manufactured and fake.

He was always recognised for having a decent singing voice, and while he may not of done Biffy’s Many of Horror justice, I feel that he does shine within the context of his original material with his quite impressive falsetto.

As a single, Amazing will solidify Cardle’s fanbase and may even work at winning over new listeners to his music, but I do highly doubt it would do anything to detract his critics who would (quite rightly) suggest that Amazing sounds very, almost too similar generically to Run For Your Life.
