THE OCEAN’S EYES – LOST ALONG THE WAY
Released 24th October 2011 (I Am Mighty Records)

Words: Kelly Jones

The Ocean’s Eyes are about to embark on a short six date tour with band Taking Hayley, and have just released their EP Lost Along The Way through I Am Mighty Records. The quintets’ EP is comprised of four tracks of heavy guitar pop-punk, opening with the track Keep Me A Secret.

With Lost Along The Way the band have created a cohesive, thorough collective of songs that make for a solid EP. The four songs feel connected, driven by their lyrics and upbeat, bouncy melody. The EPs highlights are notably the opening and closing tracks, with Keep Me A Secret and The Best Stories Are Lived serving as strong bookends for the EP.

The band pick up their stride through out the release and keep it without waning attention. Lost Along The Way feels much like the kind of release that serves as evidence that the ability to digitally pick and choose songs to listen to rather than hear the full EP is a terrible shame. There’s no doubt the EP is stronger when listened together, although the sums of its parts are equally as good alone. However, it’s apparent when listened through several times that the full energy lies behind the EP as a whole.

In keeping with the powerful opening and closing tracks, the two in between, Wake Up and Room Of Red, are undoubtedly catchy standalone songs; Room Of Red in particular. The song is driven with heavy guitars, bass and has been masterfully mixed so neither the instruments nor the vocals over shadow each other, but rather compliment the audio progression as the penultimate song.

Though Lost Along The Way doesn’t pave anything revolutionary, it’s certainly a solid release and reason to keep watch on The Ocean’s Eyes.
