THE PERFECT CRIME – PLAY IT SAFE
Released 23rd April 2012 (Speechless Records)

Words: Tom Willmott

Sadly, the trend for promising UK artists to disband prematurely is continuing. Last week, Cambridge trio The Perfect Crime decided to sever ties. In 2010, the band released their only album “Everything Else Can Wait” and, in their short career, shared stages with the likes of Twin Atlantic, Inme and Exit Ten. This latest single, “Play It Safe”, is supposedly the only surviving cut taken from what could have been their next record.

For a band of only three members, you can tell they had a compelling, dynamic sound that most have failed to capture. Fans of Thrice and Deftones will assuredly latch onto this very quickly, as the use of melodic, heavy rock elements combined with frontman Adam Montaro’s passionate and uplifting vocals, are key elements in this track.

It’s a shame that the band are no more, but on a positive note, this is by far the best thing they have done during their short time together, making it a great way to bow out. Let’s just hope that one day they will find their way back together in some shape or form. Otherwise – after listening to this – it would be such a waste of talent.
