THESE DAYS – HOPE AND GLORY
Released 17th September 2011

Words: Richard Heaven

I’m probably the wrong person to be reviewing These Days but I’ll try and keep this as fair as possible. Hope and Glory is a six track EP of safe radio rock, born from a one night stand between Snow Patrol and We Are The Ocean.

This isn’t to say that These Days don’t know how to hold down a melody – this EP is full of them – but it’s more suited to the pop kids then those who are into the more hardcore variety. Vocalist Lee Male has a good voice for the band although it’s all so polished that I’m assuming that they haven’t touched it up too much in the studio.

‘Always’ is the stand out track for me with its choppy riff and hook laden intro although the rest of the album tends to merge into one. This release might have been better if the songs dared to pack more punches then the occasional tempo change and duel vocal section but then this is perfect for the FM airwaves.

A good release from a  relatively small band. I’m sure they’ll find fans in the Madina Lake and WATO crowds but it really wasn’t for me.
