YASHIN – WE CREATED A MONSTER
Released 25th June 2012 (Triple G Music)

Words: Gaz Martinez

Yashin are one of those bands that seem to have their name thrown around quite a bit, but I’ve never got around to hearing any of their material, but with one album already under their belts and their latest effort We Created A Monster very recently dropped (And mixed by a certain Mr Justin Hill of SiKth fame.) It’s probably time I sunk my ears into this Scottish sextet’s sound.

Having absolutely no experience with this band up until now, they can certainly make one hell of an impression, the title/first track builds you up and dropkicks you right back into place with a furious wall of sound. The Last One Standing catches you with its bouncy riffing, even the breakdowns will have you jumping up instead of throwing down. The pace chops and changes at a steady pace, stopping you getting bored of the same tempo beats over and over again. Pushing up Daisies has a different pace and vibe from New Year Of New York altogether, with a catchy chorus that will be sure to warrant lighters and mobile phones out in the crowd at gigs. Angel’s Son throws you back into the pit and reminds you these guys can throw down after all.

The only gripe is the clean vocals, for me, on one hand, they work, but on the other they do not sound entirely natural for a Scottish native, but the music is fortunately dynamic enough to take some attention off of the cleans, I don’t think I could stand it otherwise.

Production wise, this record is pretty much flawless, having worked with Mr Hill before, I know how great he can make things sound, as it goes this band are good enough that they could go to any producer and achieve a similar effect. Clean vocals aside, Yashin have created something indeed, not exactly monstrous, but as sure as one to turn heads.
