Lethal – Vocals  |  Barker – Guitars  |  Calvin – Bass  |  Nobba – Guitars  |  Matty – Drums

The Smoking Hearts will recently released their debut album Pride Of Nowhere to rave reviews. The band has booked up some additional dates around the record’s release. Storming out of rural England, The Smoking Hearts unleash a whirlwind combination of relentless punk rock and cutting rock’n’roll that is best experienced in the flesh so check out the full list of dates below.

Graceful is definitely not a word to describe The Smoking Hearts. Live shows have seen guitar headstocks smashed and drum kits sprawled across stages. It is not uncommon to find half the band on the floor with the crowd and, on occasion, half the crowd on stage with the band.

In their short career as a band, The Smoking Hearts have travelled thousands of miles, opening shows for the likes of Gallows, Bring Me The Horizon, Winnebago Deal and The Supersuckers, as well as some iconic acts such as Misfits and Skid Row.

Recorded on a farm in Bedfordshire with Nick Mailing (Quireboys/Trashlight Vision) and Mastered by Russ Russell (Napalm Death/The Wildhearts) over the course of just 14 days (and nights), ‘Pride of Nowhere’ clocks in at a frantic 29 minutes and 25 seconds. It is a record for many states of mind – these are songs that will inspire attitudes to party, drink, fight. But ultimately it is the anti-thesis of sitting around and letting things happen to you; it has everything to do with making life happen for yourself.

LIVE DATES ARE AS FOLLOWS (new additions in bold) –

March:

18th – The Devonshire Arms                       Camden

19th – Goblets                                                   Southampton

26th – Esquires                                                  Bedford

Third Eye Blind – Add second London show due to phenomenal demand….New Album April 2010

Posted on 04 March 2010 by Emma

European Tour May 2010 – Extra UK Date Added
Single: “Don’t Believe A Word”
Release date: 10th May 2010
Album: ‘Ursa Major’
Release date: April 12th 2010

Due to phenomenal demand – their first UK show selling out – Third Eye Blind have added a  second UK headline date in May 2010. The band are also set to release their first album in over six years on April 12th 2010 through Mega Collider Records, followed by a single “Don’t Believe A Word” on the 10th May 2010.

The “Ursa Major” album has already been released in the USA to widespread critical and commercial acclaim. Charting at No 1 in the Billboard Alternative charts and a career best No 3 in the Billboard top 100. The Associated Press hailed the album as “a musical gem” and “a fine line between aggression and a deft pop sensibility…Jenkins’ lyrics juxtapose poetry with profanity, anger with longing and big world issues with the personal…”

Between 2007 and 2009 the band performed before a remarkable 1 million people. Pure and authentic, a canon of songs with no media coverage or radio play have compelled a new generation of followers by organic word of mouth alone.  Fans attached themselves to songs like “Slow Motion” and “Motorcycle Drive By,” the former of which was censored by their record company but began appearing on file-sharing sites with full lyrics, and is now hailed as a masterpiece being covered by countless other bands.

“Now is a much better time for us. Technology has democratized our ability to make and distribute music straight to fans, and the perception of the band has changed radically,” says Stephan Jenkins, who is happily releasing this album through the band’s own label, Mega Collider Records.  “People have been trading our songs over the years.  Third Eye Blind became a playlist; this is a completely fan-based thing, complete with those little chunks you get in homemade apple cider.”

Emotional, ironic, reflective, aggressive, and sometimes outwardly political, Ursa Major features some of the most intense music of Third Eye Blind’s career.  Jenkins backs up what he sings, having spent most of 2008 on the campaign trail lecturing colleges on behalf of President Obama and writing regularly about “taking progressives to task for not standing up for themselves” appearing on Air America and working on extreme poverty issues with the organization ‘True Meaning’.

Third Eye Blind blasted out of San Francisco when “Semi-Charmed Life” went to # 1 at Modern Rock and their self-titled album sold 6 million copies worldwide in 1997. This debut album contained several other chart-topping singles such as “Jumper,” “How’s It Going To Be,” “Graduate” and others cementing the band’s place in music history. The unique combination of brutal and controversial lyrics mixed with infectious melodies made an indelible connection with fans – it’s a phenomenon that defines Third Eye Blind and has made them the most requested band on college campuses going on three years now. Yes, this band’s audience keeps getting younger. The band’s song “Jumper” was recently used in Jim Carrey’s movie Yes Man and regularly sells over 5,000 singles a week, 10 years after its release.

Third Eye Blind are an established live draw. The band are set to tour Europe in May 2010 – the dates are as follows

Wednesday 5th May 2010                       Trix Club, Antwerp (Belgium)

Thursday 6th May 2010                          Elysee Montmartre, Paris (France)

Sunday 9th May 2010                                              Luxor, Koln (Germany)

Teenagersintokyo – Announce debut album and March tour

Posted on 01 March 2010 by Emma

TEENAGERSINTOKYO
Debut album ‘Sacrifice’ out June 1st
Single ‘Peter Pan’ March 8th
MARCH TOUR CONFIRMED

March 10th – London, Flowerpot

March 11th – Manchester, UK – Sound Control
March 27th – Luton, UK – Dark Party
March 17th – Cardiff, UK – Buffalo Bar

May 21st – London, UK – Stag and Dagger Festival
May 22nd – Liverpool, UK – Sound City Festival
June 15th – Cambridge, UK – Cambridge Summer Ball

TEENAGERSINTOKO release their debut album ‘Sacrifice’ through Backyard Recordings on 1st June 2010.

Recorded at Bryn Derwen studios deep in the welsh countryside with Faultline mainman and twice Mercury Prize nominated Bat For Lashes producer David Kosten; ‘Sacrifice’ draws together the most exciting subterranean music of the past thirty years. Sinister, crawling synths marry pulsing rhythms and screaming guitars.

In a short space of time TEENAGERSINTOKO have come from nothing to quickly rising as one of the bands to watch in 2010; selling out venues across the UK, bagging support from the likes of Zane Lowe and the NME; and most recently topping the Hype Machine chart with The Horrors remix of ‘Peter Pan’. Following the celebrated release of their self-titled EP in 2008 the band caught everyone’s attention, landing themselves international acclaim, support slots with CSS, The Slits & Gossip, a record deal with Backyard and a move to the other side of the world.

The result is debut album ‘Sacrifice’; an album that promises delight, thick in imagery, where landscapes and fire dominate the pastoral gloom. Album references are immaculate: ‘Isabella’ recalls prime era Siouxie & The Banshees with a serrated electro punk edge; while ‘Long Walk Home’ is awash with Joy Division synth swatches. The relative light and optimism of ‘New Day’ is outweighed by the emotional calamity of ‘End It Tonight’, and new single ‘Peter Pan’, whips, lashes and sparks like a loose electric cable. The bass is tar thick, the drums edgy and jittering, the guitars sharp and slicing. And caught in the centre, singer Samantha Lim’s veneer of fragile innocence fractures and collapses to allow glimpses to the turmoil beneath. It’s a crooked shadow racing for the dancefloor with its knives drawn.

TEENAGERSINTOKYO are poised to take their place amongst the art-pop new wave; now sultry shimmerscapes like ‘3046′ and deviant dancefloor destroyers like ‘Talk To The Fire’ and ‘Peter Pan’ are set to draw back the curtain on a more opulent Big Picture. Prepare to be dazzled, blackened, bewitched.

Trail – Release new single ‘City’

Posted on 18 February 2010 by Emma

TRAIL
Release new single ‘City’ on 1st March

On 22nd February 2010 London five-piece Trail will release their stunning debut album ‘To the Rest of the World’ through indie label Twistid, which will be closely followed by the new single ‘City’ on 1st March 2010 – a driving Editors-esque song with a haunting grooved bass line and melancholic rock riff.

As their name suggests Trail are beating their own path to musical notoriety and acclaim. Formed in 2007 by singer songwriter Charlie Afif and guitarist Alex Mattey the pair brought together their varied influences from Dylan and the Water Boys to 90’s grunge and started to craft a sound of their own. Recruiting mates Simon Glynn on bass, Eireann Kelly on guitar (and later joined by Minco De Bruin on Drums), they started to play some local shows and with a surprising amount of early support quickly became regulars on the London circuit that year playing the O2 Wireless festival in Hyde Park as a result of making the final 11 in the O2 Undiscovered contest (from over 3000 entrants).

With a rapidly growing fanbase Trail started to raise money on inspirational financial platform slicethepie.com. In just 9 months they had successfully amassed enough investors to raise £20k to help record their debut album. It was around this time they began attracting attention from across the Atlantic and soon multi-platinum producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More/Maroon 5) took an interest in the band and their songs. Recognising their songwriting abilities and potential he invited them over to LA to record their album and together they created, ‘To the Rest of the World’.

’To the Rest of the World’ is a mature debut – a sonic journey that takes the listener through all the tumultuous highs, lows and confused in-betweens that follow on from early youth. Opening with the instantly hooky Muse-like ‘Prism’ it’s full of high energy, catchy rock anthems (Flare, Forever Young and Fumes) sure to incite approving nods from Foos and Biffy Clyro fans as well as dark, menacing tracks (‘All Down’, ‘I Want To Know’) before the album title track brings the record to a hypnotic climax.

Confirmed live dates:

21 Feb Tommy Flynns Camden, London
22 Feb The Luminaire – ALBUM LAUNCH NIGHT! Kilburn, London
26 Feb The Met Lounge (14+) Peterborough, Midlands

Posted on 18 February 2010 by Emma

YOUNG GUNS announce additional London headline date due to public demand!
Plus:
Outcry Collective and Save Your Breath are confirmed to support the band on their April/May dates.

Hotly-tipped, High Wycombe quintet YOUNG GUNS have added an additional London headline date to their live schedule due to public demand. As well as headlining the now sold-out London Barfly on May 6th, the band will also headline London’s Relentless Garage venue on July 16th. “We still can’t believe we sold The Barfly out as quick as it went, it’s been a while since we played some headline shows, so we didn’t really know what to expect,” admits singer Gustav Wood. “I grew up in London going to all of these venues to see some of my favourite bands, so to have the opportunity to play both The Barfly and now The Garage is very humbling for myself and the rest of the band. I cannot wait for these headline dates and I promise we’ll be playing some tracks from the forthcoming album too!”

Tee Pee Records Announce ‘Sweet Apple’ debut album – Featuring J Mascis – Released April 19th

Posted on 17 February 2010 by Emma

SWEET APPLE
“love & desperation” RELEASED APRIL 19TH 2010
TEE PEE RECORDS

www.teepeerecords.com

J. Mascis – drums, guitar, vocals
Tim Parnin – guitar
John Petkovic – vocals, guitars

Dave Sweetapple – bass, vocals

Most bands are brought together by guitars, amps and drums. Sweet Apple formed after tragedy, out of friendship, on a miserable day in Vermont.

At first glance, the rock ‘n’ roll quartet might seem like one of those “indie-rock supergroup” sideshows. Yes, J. Mascis (drums/guitar/vocals) plays in Dinosaur Jr. Tim Parnin (guitar) and John Petkovic (vocals/guitar) play in Cobra Verde. Dave Sweetapple (bass/vocals) plays in Witch. But Sweet Apple was born of a death — and a cross country drive. Totally by chance.

It was rainy morning in December when John Petkovic got in his car heading eastward. He had no destination in mind, let alone plans for a band. He just wanted to drive away.

“My mother had just died after a long, horrible illness,” he says. “And I’d been totally devastated by so many things, all at once. I’d lost so much weight. I couldn’t eat or sleep. All I did was smoke cigarettes, one after another after another.”

John got in his car and went for a long smoke. Four hundred miles from his hometown of Cleveland, and out of the blue, he received a phone call from friend Dave Sweetapple.

“I couldn’t believe he was driving around aimlessly,” says Sweetapple, of Brattleboro, Vt. “When I found out he was so close to Vermont I told him to come over.”

Dave also called their mutual friend J. Mascis, who lives nearby in Amherst, Ma., and told him to come over. J did, and told John to start writing a bunch of songs when he got back home – so they could start a band. John hadn’t played guitar for months. He came up with four songs on the ride home – including “I Can’t See You,” with its haunting refrain, “I drove and drove and drove and drove. And drove and drove and drove and drove.”

Within three weeks, John was jamming with CV bandmate Tim Parnin – and they whittled 25 songs down to 12.

“Out of the blue, we had an album full of catchy tunes,” says Parnin. “It’s one of the weirdest things I’ve experienced playing in bands.”

Even weirder, many of the songs are upbeat – fun and mockingly funny, with loud, brash guitars. “Do You Remember” is a driving anthem. “I’ve Got a Feeling That Won’t Change” is wounded pop. “Flying Up a Mountain” is a nihilist singalong.

“Love and Desperation” was recorded in Cleveland and Massachusetts. It was mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady) and Don Depew (Guided By Voices, Cobra Verde).

“I tell people that I saved John’s life by starting this band,” says Mascis. “But they don’t believe me.”

Sweet Apple is:

J. Mascis – Guitar god in Dinosaur Jr.; drummer in Witch. Played with Cobra Verde for a spell. Owns hundreds of guitar pedals and dozens of Adidas. Favorite color is purple. Worked in a coffee shop in India, even though he doesn’t drink coffee. Spends a lot of money at Whole Foods.

Tim Parnin – Guitarist in Cobra Verde. Plays guitar with former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosely. Former clothing designer. Cleveland Cavaliers season ticket holder. Partied with Shaq.

John Petkovic – Frontman for Cobra Verde. Still gets acting residuals from “The OC.” Former aid to the Crown Prince of Yugoslavia. Ex-guitarist in Guided by Voices. Writes about bars and movies for Cleveland’s daily newspaper. Working on underwear-themed art show. Smokes less, eats more gummy bears.

Dave Sweetapple – Bassist in Witch. Native of Newfoundland, Canada (where they beat baby seals). Prefers rock over free jazz. Grew his hair long after seeing a photo of the Alice Cooper Band. Collects rare mushrooms. Trains a best-in-breed Scottish Deerhound named Cyril.

Krystle Warren – Next Big Thing show+ Soho Theatre residency

Posted on 02 February 2010 by Emma

KRYSTLE WARREN
HMV Next Big Thing at the Jazz Cafe 8th February
Four nights at The Soho Theatre 24th – 27th February

Krystle Warren hails from Kansas City and learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver. Her tastes range from Rufus Wainwright to Betty Carter, Willie Nelson to Nina Simone and she’s toured the US with Martha Wainwright, Zap Mama, Rodrigo & Gabriela and Erykah Badu.
There is no Krystle Warren-shaped pigeon-hole. The last few months have seen her equally at home at the London Jazz Festival’s “Jazz Voice” evening at the Barbican alongside the likes of Kurt Elling and Natalie Merchant, supporting country singer Diana Jones at Union Chapel, touring with the high priests of “vocal play” Naturally 7, and appearing alongside the likes of Green Gartside, Teddy Thompson, Lisa Hannigan and Vashti Bunyan on the Way To Blue – The Songs of Nick Drake tour last week.

This February Krystle Warren returns to London to play HMV’s ‘Next Big Thing‘ with Rox and Andreya Triana at the Jazz Cafe.

Also in February, Krystle Warren will play a short run of late-night sessions at the Soho Theatre. Although accustomed to the arenas of theatre and comedy, the Soho Theatre has rarely before opened its doors to a live music act. It is therefore fitting that Krystle Warren will take the stage, combining her extraordinary vocal talent with a strong personality and charismatic stage presence, to set in motion a future of live music at the Soho Theatre.
This is a rare opportunity to see Krystle perform in a small studio theatre with an intimacy befitting to her musical style.
