Future of the Left are pleased to announce details of a headline tour in June covering the UK and parts of Europe as well as summer festival appearances.

As their current outside-of-their-own-heads single, ‘sheena is a t-shirt salesman’, blasts out across the airwaves – played and championed by Radio 1’s Daniel P Carter, Huw Stephens as well as XFM, 6Music and Kerrang! Radio – these dates will please fans no end who have been patiently waiting for the band to tour again.

Full dates are as follows:

JUNE
1 Diksmuide, 4AD Belgium
2 Paris: La Maroquinerie, France
3 Lille, La Peniche, France
5 Brussels, VK, Belgium

7 Cheltenham, Frog and Fiddle (2000 Trees “launch” party)
8 Nottingham, Bodega
9 Manchester, Deaf Institute
10 Newcastle, Academy 2
11 Glasgow, King Tuts
13 Brighton, The Haunt
14 London, XOYO
JULY
14 2000 Trees Festival, Cheltenham
21 Sheffield Tramlines Festival
29 Off The Cuff Festival

AUGUST
5 Matlock YNOT Festival
9 Croatia, Zagreb Terraneo Festival

The shows coincide with the release of the band’s hotly anticipated album ‘the plot against common sense’, which is to be released on 11th June in the UK and Europe and 12th June in the USA. Constituting 49.8 minutes of singing, shouting, slinking, smashing and (at times) sobbing, the album is the best thing the band have put their name to in this or any other dimension, a fact which is not open to debate.

Words - Kelly Jones

Bowling For Soup recently hit our shores on their third acoustic tour. Founding member, bassist, and backing vocalist Erik Chandler very kindly sat down with Noise Addiction before their London show to discuss how it feels knowing the fans have embraced their acoustic ventures, how this tour almost didn’t happen and why they love their UK crowds.

This is the last show on this tour – how has it been?

It’s been amazing, it’s so cliché to say that each night has been better than the last but honestly, every night has been better than the last. We’re really looking forward to tonight, we have big expectations.

You’ve started coming to the UK almost bi-annually, with acoustic shows in Spring and full shows in Autumn. How does it feel knowing the acoustic shows have been so embraced by fans?

It’s really cool for us, I was actually talking about this earlier because we weren’t exactly sure what the response would be when we first started doing it, and we got a lot of resistance from the powers-that-be; and, in fact, they still are trying to tell us that we come to this country too much, and it’s like but people are still buying tickets so why wouldn’t we do that? We’ve always had such a wonderful relationship with the United Kingdom, the fans here have always been really, really cool, so it’s very nice for us.

This is your third Spring acoustic tour, when you did your first one did you ever imagine coming back more times with more acoustics?

We hoped that we would, and the third one almost didn’t happen, because like I was saying before, we had to fight really, really hard to make this happen and so luckily it did, and luckily we get to shove it in the face and say ‘look what we did’, and it worked and everything was great. So we’re just super stoked that people are still interested enough that we get to do this thing. It’s really cool for us to do this tour because it’s something very different, much more intimate. It’s nice people get to see another representation of our music.

How is the atmosphere different, transferring those songs you usually play live to playing acoustic?

It’s not that big of a deal to do that, because all the songs started out on acoustic guitars anyway and so, basically, before a tour happens Jaret and I discuss the songs that we want to do and I spend a couple of days, kind of deconstruct them from the studio versions down to the acoustic versions and then we spend… I was going to say we spend a couple of days rehearsing for it but for this tour we didn’t even rehearse. We just discussed what we were going to do and before the first show we sat in the dressing room and went over a few things and that was it. It’s been really cool because there’s been some really cool moments that are happening on stage every night and it’s just nothing is rehearsed and these things are just happening and manifesting themselves in the heat of the moment, which is great.

The UK definitely enjoy humour, do you feel that the crowds connect with a lot of the songs because of that?

It’s a different kind of fan culture here and people tend to be way more into the whole thing, like people come to the show and they want to make it an experience and everyone is kind of involved in this experience, there’s a great unity of the crowd and everyone kind of works together to make something possibly greater than the sum of its parts. It’s a different kind of music fan here.

You’ve played several different venues here in London that are no longer around – like Astoria, do you miss those venues?

Yeah, we do, I feel very lucky that we had the opportunity to play in a place like the Astoria and Brixton Academy, we’ve kind of been in so many historic venues that it’s really cool, like you grew up in the States and you read about these places and then all of a sudden I’m there headlining on the stage. We’re really, really lucky to play the places that we’ve been.

Obviously Astoria’s now gone so it’s even more history…

Exactly! The amount of legend that it had before automatically doubles as soon as they tear it down.

Does it feel odd, or did it feel odd to begin with, playing the acoustic shows just you and Jaret?

No, he and I have been doing this together for probably close to fifteen years, the way we were able to first quit our day jobs was doing almost exactly this same thing. We’d go set up in pubs and play for tips and then after about two weeks of doing that we realized how much money we were making. That’s kind of where all this comes from. It’s a little weird being out on tour without Chris and Gary and we miss them greatly but it’s cool, the shows are a completely different kind of mindset.

And finally, will you be coming back to the UK in the Autumn?

We will be back in October, those dates are going to be announced very, very shortly.

Thank you very much to Erik for taking the time to speak with Noise Addiction and we look forward to the full electric tour in the Autumn.
